The wage requirements for foreign nationals seeking to obtain Germany’s EU Blue Card have been raised.

Nearly all foreign nationals applying for Germany’s EU Blue Card in 2025 will be impacted by the increased wage requirements, which went into force at the beginning of this year.

As of 2025, foreign citizens who already have a particular work offer from a company in the country must earn a gross annual income of at least €48,300 in order to be eligible for the EU Blue Card, according to the German Federal Government.

This indicates that, in comparison to 2024, when the minimum criterion was €45,300, the income requirement for this group of foreign workers has climbed by 6.6%.

In a profession with a bottleneck, the salary need for foreigners has also increased.

The authority also clarified that foreign nationals who wish to apply for an EU Blue Card and work in a so-called bottleneck profession—which includes, among many others, the IT, STEM, construction, and educational sectors—now have to meet higher income requirements.

If their job has been approved by the job Agency, people working in bottleneck professions will need to earn at least €43,759.80 a year in 2025, up from €41,041.80 in 2024, in order to be eligible for the EU Blue Card.

However, according to data from the German Federal Government, young professionals entering the workforce still need to make €41,041.80 per year, which is the same amount as in 2024.

What Advantages Does the EU Blue Card Offer?

As long as they hold higher professional qualifications, highly qualified professionals from outside the EU are granted the right to live and work in the union under the EU Blue Card program.

There are several advantages to the program, which grants work permits. Those possessing an EU Blue Card can switch employers without going through lengthy formalities.

Additionally, non-EU nationals can obtain the EU Blue Card, which grants them the ability to become long-term citizens of the union, better family reunification conditions, and the ability to work temporarily in another EU member state without a work permit, among other benefits.

To receive the EU Blue Card, applicants must, however, fulfill a number of additional requirements in addition to the salary requirements
