The country’s immigration services have warned about a backlog of applications, so foreign residents in Ireland are encouraged to renew their permits in October, especially if they intend to go outside the country over the Christmas season.

The Irish Department of Justice asked foreign nationals residing in the nation to submit their authorization applications by October 31 in a news statement.

It is strongly advised that foreign nationals whose existing permission expires in the coming weeks or during their travel dates, as well as those who intend to return home for the Christmas holiday, file their applications in advance.

Authorities Declare That It Can Take Up To A Month To Process IRP Card Renewals

The Immigration Service stated in the same press release that it currently takes three to four weeks to process an IRP card renewal. Due to the overwhelming number of applications for permission renewals filed at the Dublin Immigration Services Registration Office Burgh Quay, there has been a protracted backlog.

The entire process may take longer than expected in addition to the delay in processing permits renewal applications, since it may take up to two weeks to get the new IRP card visa post. Travel may be made easier with the presence of an up-to-date IRP card, which enables the user to leave and return to the nation without restriction.

“Any renewal submitted after October 31, 2023, will not be processed and an IRP card will not be delivered in time to facilitate travel over the Christmas holiday period,” the Immigration Services Office stated in a statement. The authorities did, however, pledge to use all reasonable effort.

In the first eight months of 2024, over 27,000 work permits were granted in Ireland.

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) reports that from January to August of 2024, Ireland issued 27,181 work permits in total.

The health and social work sectors received 9,125 of the total licenses issued, with information and communication sectors coming in second (4,628). A total of 2,533 work permits for the forestry, fishery, and agriculture industries were granted. Just in August, foreign workers received 3,358 work permits, or 12% of all work permits issued.

Ireland is experiencing a labor shortage in 20 different occupations, with the industries most impacted being healthcare, IT, engineering, manufacturing, construction, and transportation, according to the 2023 EURES report.
