Norway has chosen to reopen its embassy in South Sudan, according to the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Ministry announced in an official statement that the embassy in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, will reopen today, April 8, 2025.

The embassy was closed for 13 days before reopening. On March 26, Norway temporarily closed its embassy in Juba because of the country’s worsening security situation

Although the authorities have not provided an explanation for the embassy’s reopening, it is thought that the decision was made after the situation somewhat improved.

South Sudan’s Travel Warning Is Still at the Highest Level

The authorities have not downgraded travel advice to the East African nation of Juba, despite the fact that Norway has reopened its embassy there.

The travel warning for South Sudan is still at the highest level, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized.

Therefore, it is highly recommended that no Norwegian travel to South Sudan be undertaken. Norwegian nationals currently in South Sudan are encouraged to depart immediately and are also cautioned against traveling there.

This request has been made since the government’s capacity to offer consular support to Norwegians in South Sudan is limited.

Germany Still Doesn’t Have an Embassy in South Sudan

Last month, Germany temporarily closed its embassy in South Sudan, joining Norway in doing so.

The decision was made because of the escalating tensions in South Sudan, which could push the nation to the brink of civil war, according to Germany’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 22.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock commented on the situation, saying that the East African nation’s government is responsible for putting the peace deal into effect and stopping the violence.

Additionally, the Minister emphasized that embassy staff safety is a top priority and suggested that the embassy will stay closed until things improve.

Whether Germany will follow Norway and reopen its embassy in South Sudan remains to be seen. Regarding the actions they intend to take, the German authorities have not yet released any statements.
