Prague is once again making waves on the global stage. According to the World’s Best Cities Index 2026 by consultancy Resonance, the Czech capital has firmly established itself as one of the world’s most livable cities. While Prague is ranked 38th globally, it stands out as the top capital in Central and Eastern Europe.
What Makes Prague Stand Out
Post-pandemic recovery played a big role in Prague’s strong showing. Resonance points out that by prioritizing resident needs over tourism, the city has become more accessible and livable.
In the index’s Health category, Prague made the top five globally, and it secured sixth place for Standard of Living. That speaks to major investments the city has made in culture, transport, and urban regeneration.
A Hub of Culture & Community
The city’s riverside areas are thriving: the Náplavka embankment now hosts markets and galleries, while the Čapadlo riverside comes alive in the evenings with open-air concerts. These spots helped boost Prague’s ranking in Sights & Landmarks (16th) and Nightlife (17th).
Prague also remains a powerhouse for museums and cultural institutions. The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, Kunsthalle Praha, and the National Gallery all contribute to the city’s 16th-place global ranking in the Museums category. Events like the Signal Festival further animate the city’s public spaces each fall.
Infrastructure Is Rapidly Improving
Urban development is a big part of Prague’s success story. Work is underway on the Metro D line, and the Smíchov City project is transforming underused areas along the Vltava into mixed-income housing and workspaces.
Architectural highlights are also popping up — for instance, the Masaryčka complex, designed by Zaha Hadid, is becoming a destination for both retail and business. Nearby, the Savarin Palace is being revitalized. Meanwhile, the hospitality sector is booming: the opening of W Prague has breathed new life into the Grand Hotel Evropa on Wenceslas Square.
What It Means for the Future
On a European scale, Prague ranks 17th among all European cities in the Resonance index. According to the study, “Prague’s future shines bright,” suggesting that the city’s mix of stability, culture, and growth continues to appeal to both residents and international visitors.
