The Schengen Area is experiencing severe labor shortages in the nursing field, thus the European Commission has allocated a total of €1.3 million to help recruit and retain nurses in the region.

Polish capital Warsaw, which is now holding the EU presidency for the first half of the year, hosted the launch of this EU activity, which was created by the European Commission in collaboration with WHO Europe.

According to the WHO, several EU nations are struggling to retain nurses, and by 2030, when there will likely be a shortage of more than 18 million healthcare workers worldwide, the situation will only get worse.

The EU wants to recruit more nurses.

Through this campaign, a number of events will take place over a 36-month period throughout EU member states. Priority will be given to nations with serious healthcare system issues.

Additionally, in order to make this program convenient for both national and subnational levels, the Member States will be tailoring its unique requirements in cooperation with nurses’ organizations and social partners.

This campaign will also include initiatives about the advantages of digital transformation, impact assessments for nurses, mentoring programs for aspiring nurses, and ways to enhance the well-being of these workers

With 75 nurses per 100,000 residents in 2020, Norway had the most nursing graduates of any EU nation, according to Eurostat, the EU Statistical Office. In terms of nurses per 100,000 residents, Bulgaria (6.9) and Romania (6.4) had the lowest numbers, while Denmark and Sweden had the highest numbers (44.1 and 43.5 per 100,000).

Healthcare Professionals Are Critically Needed in These 7 EU Countries

More medical personnel, including specialized physicians and nurses, would be valued in Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

Specialist physicians, general practitioners, nurses, healthcare assistants, midwives, physiotherapists, pharmacists, dentists, audiologists, and speech therapists are among the medical professions that these seven nations require.
